Best practices for nurturing colored hair & painted highlights:

Updated: Jul 18, 2020

Understanding how hair color evolves over time and the simple steps you can take to protect your investment in your image.

I often think about how our hair is our most worn accessory. It's an expression of a daily mood or scenario, a glimpse into who or what we are channeling at any given moment. It could be intentionally coiffed or organically effortless & literally so many things in between!

It's important to understand the chemical changes that take place when you begin experimenting with color. It's crucial to reinforce the integrity of the hair fiber when coloring and respecting the process of achieving a goal. Often times end results aren't instantly obtained in a single session. This rule is specifically true if your natural hair is darker or you've improperly home colored over time.  As a colorist, it's my job to help you achieve your goals in a way that will keep your hair healthy and inform you of methods for protecting your investment and keeping your look fresh in between salon visits. I never understood the sense in spending good money on gorgeous hair and then washing it with low quality products and expecting it to maintain it's brilliance. I've been working on eliminating harsh chemicals from the products I personally use and have great luck with organic and natural alternatives. Although I do believe there is a place for

Brunettes & the struggle with "brassy/orange tones".

It's a common theme, I find with my brunette clients. They return with unwanted warmth after 4-8 weeks between color maintenance. There are steps one can take to combat these unwanted tones but a lot depends upon frequency of wash and with what you're washing with. It's safe to say that the less you wash your hair the longer the color will stay true to original tone. Protecting your hair from the sun will also help protect against fading. There are products available that offer SPF which is important for prolonged exposure to the elements. Water quality is also a culprit of color shifting. Harsh minerals built up in pipes, "hard water" can alter color and cause brittleness to your hair. If you suspect this might be happening to you there are ways to test and filter your water.

Blondes & cooling with Violet care.

Icy shades and platinum blondes would benefit greatly from a blonde specific regime. By using shampoos/masques/treatments that are violet in tone, blondes, silvers and "ashy" looks are protected from yellowing over time. It's inevitable that after leaving the salon, your color is going to shift in between visits. Know what tools are available to maintain long lasting brilliance and what home care steps are crucial to having healthy happy hair.

On the Flip Side:

“Embracing a golden glow and a multitude of variations in between.”

The spectrum of color is one that truly excites me. There are so many variations on a tone, the possibilities seem endless! One of my favorite ways to color hair is by hand painting dimension. Through a process called balayage, we can create gorgeous natural looking color that grows out gracefully over the span of a few months. With the use of glazes/toners we can experiment with a multitude of colors over time/ in between painting sessions. On average balayage appointments range from 3-6 months depending on if the end result is grey blending or a fashion shade. For maintenance on tone, a gloss is recommend every 4-6 weeks. Using color wheel knowledge and cool products like Overtone, fantasy colors are easier to maintain and play with once dimension is painted into the hair.
